I know it’s a bit early… 21.11.

…happy holidays (from Radiohead)!

Andy has the day off today, so we are hoping to get the house nice and clean before we head out of town tomorrow morning. We’re going to Hattiesburg, Mississippi (with my family) to visit my grandma. I’m so excited! She’s an excellent cook, and she’s already prepared mississippi mud bars, carmel cake, pecan pie, fudge, three types of casseroles, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and of course she’ll have turkey and ham. We will have so many leftovers…it’ll be great. If we do get our house cleaned up enough we’d like to have a ‘left-over’ potluck party. I can’t wait to finally have company over again!

I wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving tomorrow and safe travels if you are going to eat abroad.

More Fall Finds and Around the Mill 18.11.

Apparently, there is an archaeologist building a space from one of the cable cars. All of them will eventually be restored. Grace is supposed to get back with me about how much they are to rent. That would be an awesome store. There’s so much coming to the Mill. I wonder what this place will be like in ten or so years. Not just this place, but the whole neighborhood…the while city. I smell a-change a-comin’.

Lucky Dallas 17.11.

Last night was weird. Andy was driving home from work when he saw a tiny white animal jump out of a recycling truck on the interstate. When he got home he told me about it, and we decided to go back and see what it was and if it was ok. Sure enough, huddled on the side of I-565 was a tiny white and tan kitten. My heart sank when I spotted her little gray ears. I knew what I was trying to deny in my head was true. Andy jumped out of the car and tried to get close to her but she started to dart into the traffic. Andy backed away as we both watched her jump onto the ledge of the interstate…and jump off. 50 feet. I looked over the edge and saw her barely miss the sharp tips of the twisting metal fence below. She landed on her feet and actually walked off a little ways before curling in a ball. Tears were stinging my eyes as we sprinted back to the car and hauled ass to Dallas Street. She jumped right where Roper Automotive was. She was huddled in a ball beside the fence. For two hours last night we tried to offer her food and water to try to get close to her. Our plan was to take her to the emergency animal clinic to get her help. She kept running off and eventually we lost trace of her. I gave my cell number to the gentleman whose back yard we followed her into last and he said he’d call if he saw her.

This morning we were both awake by 8am with the little bundle of fluff on our mind. We went back to the yard we left the night before. The man happened to be in his yard and said he just found the kitten sitting on the tire of his jeep and was just about to call me. She was still alive! She made it through the night! However, in the daylight, I could see her eyes were having trouble tracking. I’m sure she has a head injury of some kind. But this put a whole new perspective of the situation. She was most likely seeing three or four of these giant humans hovering over her trying to touch her. We tried just sitting with her and I actually got a chance to pet her for a bit before she darted off. She ran into the fence a few times before climbing and jumping over. She seemed set on not letting us get her. All I can think to do is let her rest…where ever she is…and hope to find her when she’s not so dizzy. I talked to another neighbor where I think she ran to last and also gave them my number. They had cats of their own, so the woman offered to leave some food out in case the kitten was in the yard and got hungry. She has two sons and a daughter that are going to keep an eye out.

I really hope we can find her and get her help. I mean, to survive jumping out of a truck going 60+ mph, to land and not get hit by a car, to jump off a 50+ foot high edge, and be able to walk if off is a fight for life. I’d love to give her a nice, safe environment to live in if she’ll let me. If not, perhaps in a few weeks time she’ll wander into the arms of another caring soul willing to save someone in need. It makes me wonder exactly what Maple or Sadie might have gone through before they became ours.

This ones for you Lucky Dallas. May you have a safe life from here on out, and perhaps we’ll meet again.

showshowshows 15.11.

Guess where I am updating? My house! We are really livin’ now. Although I did enjoy the seven month vacation from the world wide web being in my home, I do have to say I’m glad it’s back. I always had access to the internet via my office, but it’s nice to be able to sit in my peejays and check my email…or update lj whenever I feel.

In the past few weeks we’ve had three pretty successful shows in Vertical House…one I’ve already documented. Here’s some from the other two. I have videos of at least one song from each band (but that’s a whole other post on it’s own).

Sleep Party played on November 7th

Last night, November 14th, the Can Kickers show was held in Vertical House. By far the best. And it was nice because Zak and Greg actually booked the show, therefore, we didn’t have to worry about all the clean-up and lock-up you typically have to do when you work a show.

Abby Banks, author (photographer) of Punk House, played a short film based on the making of her book.

so cold 09.11.

We have no heat in our house. We probably should have addressed this issue before the cold season came upon us, but our funds were needed elsewhere in the renovation…until now. There used to be an antique gas heater that was hooked up to our living room fireplace. However, we disconnected it to take down the plaster on the fireplace and rip up the carpet. Plus, I’m not sure of it’s age and safety. Since we have a gas line that is already in place next to the fireplace, we decided on ventless gas logs. After finding a really nice unit that would fit perfectly with our house, we discover the city won’t approve ventless gas as your primary source of heat. I still yet have my question of “why?” answered. So, the search for our ‘primary’ source of heat continued. Andy’s dad was talking to a co-worker who mentioned this new product that she has in her house. She said it works wonderfully. After researching it a bit more and falling in love, we got one! The supplier was out, so we found one on ebay. Hopefully we will get in by Monday. And hopefully this can be considered a primary source of heat so we can continue to add the ventless logs…since we hope to have one in each fireplace.

Why not central heating/cooling you may ask? First off, the quotes for a unit were well over $10,000. Second, and more important, I don’t think we would benifit from it much. Our ceilings are 14 feet tall and I think it would cost a huge chunk to try to heat that house with a central unit. Not to mention the fact we don’t even use the upstairs at this point (electrical wiring upstairs is a fire hazard…we have to get it all re-wired eventually). My dad supports my thoughts on this and agrees it wouldn’t really work for us. Way back when we had no walls I asked our neighbor (with the twin house…they were built at the same time for the mill managers and have the same layout and everything) about central heating and air. She has it, but only uses the heat. She also closed up all of her fireplaces and took down her chimney AND lowered her ceilings to be only 8 feet tall. She told me she wished she had spent the money on the fireplaces instead of the central system. So, that’s my third point.

Sadie is a cover hog now. I don’t blame her though. We have a kerosine heater that we turn on for a couple of hours during the night before we head to bed. Sadie and Maple will cuddle into one big catball at the end of the bed (next to the heater). But when we turn it off, Sadie crawls under the covers to stay warm. She purrs so loud the entire time she’s under the covers…even when she’s asleep. I think Maple is a bit more used to the cold, given her kittenhood, and she’ll just stay curled up in a ball at the foot of the bed. I’ll cover her up when I can, but she’ll always wiggle her way out. With this new heater, since the unit itself never gets hot to the touch, it’s safe for pets and children to sit on it. You can even use it as an end table! It’s about time something like this is finally available. Talk about perfect timing.
