white bunny flowers?!?!?! this backyard continues to surprise me
maple looks evil & sadie just sat there and let me put a ton of grass on her
broccoli sprouts!
Today we built 4 beds that will eventually grow our veggies. We built them out of the wood crates that were used as walls in our kitchen and bath. (I also want to make shelves out of a few of the crate pieces). I know we need to start a compost pile, but it’s kinda hard to actually remember…but I’ll get there. Sadie and Maple enjoy getting to go outside (just about) everyday. I do too! The sun brings the feeling of life…so warm and energetic. I can’t wait until these random chilly days turn to warm days that continue into the night. Porch parties. Cook-outs. Fireflies. Warm walks. Swimming.
It seems as if everyone is coming from or going to New Orleans except us. hah I’ve tallied over 30 references so far. No worries…I know we’ll go soon enough. I used to long for the ocean and sandy beaches, now I beg to see the shotgun houses and antique brick streets that posses me.

Today Andy and I went to one of my favorite places, Bennett Nurseries. We were hoping to find some veggies, but I guess it’s a bit early. So, we bought a bunch of seeds to start indoors and a few pretty plants. This year we are hoping to get our raised beds built and began laying out the garden. I want something that will be green year round, so we’ll use plenty of evergreens along the entire fencing (especially in the back, to block the entire alley from seeing in our house). I also am in love with succulents, so those will be primary. My favorite flowers are white, so that will be my starting color. Once we have a well established garden, I’ll add bits of color here and there.

When we got home we gathered all of the planters to decide who goes where. We started all of the seeds (veggies and herbs) except corn and sunflowers. I also planted the flowers we got into nice, big planters so they’ll have plenty of room for the season.

hen & chicks | sedum ogon
asparagus | lily of the valley | bleeding heart & snowstorm giant snowflake
(also planted, but not pictured: lantana, green pepper, okra, lettuce, broccoli, parsley, basil, oregano, onion, cucumber (regular and pickled), pumpkin, cantaloupe, eggplant, tomato, and asparagus)

Andy and I went antiquing today! We took Hwy 36 all the way through Hartselle. A little bird told us there were claw foot tubs outside of a particular store, so we went to check them out. Unfortunately, none of them were worth the cost given their condition. However, I found several nice items for great prices. In Hartselle we stopped at a homemade fudge shoppe. I chose cookies n’ cream, and mint chocolate swirl while Andy chose chocolate pecan, and peanut butter and chocolate. Each one was SO delicious. It only seemed to rain in between large stretches of road, but every time we were able to walk between shops, the sun was shining.

It was a nice outing.

Today I saw something I’ve never seen before…or even thought about. I saw a ladybug laying eggs!
Pretty bizarre! Afterwards, she just flew away and that was that. I read up on it and they should hatch within a week. I’ll try to remember to check on them, although their larvae stage isn’t too cute.

The naked lady now has daffodils and our backyard is full of bunny flowers!
I found the naked lady vase in our old house. She had been left in the bathroom cabinet. Andy thinks we were meant to have the vase cause I used to have short red hair and resembled her.
I dubbed the colorful weeds Bunny Flowers when I was five for obvious reasons…they look like bunnies (with a funny mouth, but that’s ok). I remember them most from my Grandmother’s yard in Mississippi. I used to pick a bunch for her before we went inside to say hello. When my parents told me they were weeds and not actual flowers, I remember being so sad. Now they have graced us with their presence over our entire backyard.
