Purgatory Lounge on June 14th 15.06.

This was the best show (imo) thus far. They are always so much fun, and so different so it is hard to compare them. This time, I sang “Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)” by the Doors. My character died from getting hit by a car on a walk to the bar. I was last in line this time, and I thought I’d be super nervous, but actually it was quite opposite. By the time my turn came, I felt very relaxed and calm. Also, this was our new camera’s first time shooting a show. I’m very pleased!

It was a crowded couch this time

Backyard Groceries 09.06.

The first fruits (and peppers) of our labor.

Day Lilies! These were actually planted before we moved in. It’s nice because each year there’s a new group of them that have popped up in random places around our property.

Hear come the broccoli! I was beginning to wonder if we were going to see anything this year. Sadie loves to hide out under the broccoli leaves. I don’t blame her…it’s at least 5 degrees cooler under there.

First pickling cucumber! There are about 10+ that are growing…and I know they grow fast. We’ve been gathering pickling recipes and we stocked up on mason jars. I’m excited! We’ve had about two strawberries come in and turn a gorgeous red, only to be nibbled by the birds. Gotta fix that…

Lantana and chamomile buds. Lantana are my favorite types of flowers (this year). They come in several color varieties and this plant is actually from last year! Woo perennials! We’ve also planted a white variety as well as a white and yellow mixture. And I can’t wait to make my own tea from the chamomile…mmm.

Roma and regular tomatoes. We have about 20 Romas that are about to ripen and about three “regular” tomatoes. Then there are two plants that are still growing, but have now fruits.

I still want to make a rain barrel and began planning where to put irrigation hoses. It takes about an hour to water all these plants, and I know if we plan on an irrigation of some sort for next season, it would be a lot better. That thought was on the back of my mind when we started this year, but to be honest, I didn’t think we’d ever get this far with gardening. I’m so glad we did. And now I want more! I figure building the irrigation system will make a nice fall project once it’s cooler and we can make some adjustments to the garden beds. I want to also run it anywhere we plan to extend the landscaping and have nozzles that can open and close as we please.

I also want a pond or water feature. I would love a natural swimming hole one day, but a small(er) pond will be great for the first few years. Our neighbor has a koi fish pond that some of the neighborhood kitties are drawn to. Mine included…since Sadie got into her yard one day.

hah! neat! 09.06.

I just got an email from NowPublic.com and they wanted to use a photo of mine for a story about salmonella outbreak linked to tomatoes. And you’ll see my first little Roma of the year!

haha surely ours are ok though! I just picked 4 Romas out of the garden yesterday. hmmm…any idea how salmonella “infests” something? I wonder if I should be weary of my tomatoes, or are they usually only contaminated if grown commercially?

Everything Happens for a Reason… 09.06.

So…we still haven’t found our camera. I give up. And that’s ok beeeeecause on Friday my dad surprised me with a brand new Olympus DSLR. I am beyond ecstatic. My grandmother (his mom) made an investment in our now-for-real-it’s-going-to-happen photography business. We’ll both be photographing under the name Vertical House since Andy and I are about to really push this creative baby we’ve made.

But yeah…Friday my dad and I made plans to take the claw foot tub to have it professionally sand blasted. He was supposed to be at my house around 10, but didn’t show up until 11:30 or so because he went to get the camera. He said he was tired of watching ebay (I don’t blame him…that can be so frustrating sometimes) and he was afraid we’d keep procrastinating and miss out on events.

He bought a kit, so we have the body, two lenses, and a flash. The plan is to get another camera body so we’ll have both lenses in use at the same time. I’m super excited and I know my dad is too. Finally. While we were driving out to take the tub, he was reading the camera manual and was like a giddy schoolboy learning about all of the features.

I guess you should know that my dad is an outstanding photographer. He started just before high school, and when he was in HS, he was the only photo journalist at his school. He was in charge of the newspaper and yearbook. Photography got him into college where he minored in it, with a major in graphic design. Unfortunately, with the computer boom, his degree was rendered useless since he never jumped on the Adobe train. However, he still has his eye(s) and now he can put them to use again.

He made a comment about how he spent 15 years in the military, 15 years in the restaurant biz (my parents owned a bar/grille for about 7 years in Madison…after that, he just never really got out of the kitchen), and he has shit to show for it. But now he wants to spend the next 15+ years doing what he truly loves. I gave him the same “speech” as I did Andy about refusing to do anything else until you’ve tried to live your dream. I’m just glad my dad finally can.

Anyway…

This weekend was Bamalama Fest. It was so awesome! Hot, but awesome. We had the record store open the majority of the time, so unfortunately didn’t get to see as many bands as we wanted to. But that’s ok cause we did VERY well at the store, and we didn’t have to pay to get into Bamamlama. Saturday, I also went to Laura’s wedding (congrats again to her…so beautiful!) and then returned to the mill for the rest of Saturday’s show. The Counterclock Wise played at Bandito Burrito during the break between the day and night show. That was super fun. Sunday was nice and relaxing compared to the other two days. The show didn’t start until 6, so it wasn’t nearly as hot. The Pine Hill Haints finished out the festival, and it was great to see them again. As always.

I’m still trying to learn all of the settings on this camera. Today I’ll finally have time to read through the manual. Ok, onto some of the shots from the weekend!

Ashley (middle) came down from Washington D.C. for Bamalama. It was great to see her again, although I still vote she moves back here. But I guess if you can escape this black hole called Huntsville, then maybe it’s a good thing…hah.

Purgatory Lounge 06.06.

Purgatory Lounge is the utmost in perpetual stagnancy through suspension of reality. Sweet Lucy and The Dreaded Firefly host a night of purely permeating music with just enough danger and beauty to keep the hairs on your neck standing up till the next day, spanning time to ensure that all who listen will be enlightened in the ways of “the in-between”. In this Bizarro Vegas style lounge, “Atmosphere” is the one and only language you need to know. You will also need 6 bucks, so, if you’re uninterested in what the same old bar scene has to offer, take a number and enjoy some “musak” in the one waiting room that keeps on waiting. Some of your favorite tone benders along with featured crooners will spend the evening providing the soundtrack to eternity.

Show starts 9pm on June 14th

Right now I’m stuck between two song choices. A gorgeous song by Hurray for the Riff Raff in which my character would drown to death…or Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar) by The Doors in which my character would most likely have died of alcohol poisoning. I think the latter would be more “fun” to do. But we’ll see…cause I know Matt has already started learning the other song. But (and I’m no musician) but the Alabama Song doesn’t seem that hard.
